‘Without The Word II’ 2002 Six different monitors are placed on a large table, which is divided
into six parts by means of wooden
partitions. Each monitor shows a picture of a person talking directly into the
camera. The speakers are people from different countries talking different
languages. At regular intervals they all suddenly break off their speech at
the same moment and their face-expressions transform into a state of
concentration and quiet meditation. This is done by computer manipulation of
the original footage. The content of what is performed is arbitrary. The work deals with the
physical and mental consequences of speaking or being silent in general. The
spoken word monopolizes the space in which it is spoken. As the silence
falls, there’s always the echo of what has been said. |
